A DISHONEST APOLOGY

A "pacifist" history professor at Saint Xavier University has stirred up a controversy with a vitriolic e-mail to a first-year cadet at the Air Force Academy. Peter Kirstein told Robert Krupiel that he and his fellow cadets are "cowards" and "imperialists" who are "worse than the snipers" because of their "aggressive baby-killing tactics of collateral damage."

Under pressure, Kirstein has since apologized, saying "I did not mean to impugn [Krupiel's] character." Sounds to us as if that was exactly what he meant to do.
